Dear Tourism Friends,
You may have already seen media reports that Wisconsin added 12,900 new private sector jobs last month. What you might not know is that Tourism led the way! Deputy Dave and I had the incredible opportunity to represent our industry by joining Governor Walker in this announcement yesterday. What a day for Tourism!!
We thought it would be helpful to give you a few details from the Department of Workforce Development report. You can help us by spreading the word among your own stakeholders and local media about the power of tourism to create jobs.
- 12,900 private-sector jobs were added from May to June, representing the largest one-month gain of private sector jobs since September 2003.
- Total net new jobs in Wisconsin last month rose by 9,500.
- The largest growth was in "tourist type" activities that fall under the categories of Leisure and Hospitality, Accommodations (lodging) and Food Services, and Retail Trade.
- Tourism jobs including seasonal positions grew by nearly 8 percent or 20,000 jobs.
- Seasonally adjusted, jobs in the leisure and hospitality industry made up 6,200 of the net total 9,500 jobs added. Remember, these numbers take out any seasonal positions added to meet the increase in summer travel.
- The accommodations (lodging) sector was the fastest growing with an increase in jobs of 35.7 percent.
- According to data from the DWD, over 60% of people employed in the tourism industry work for a small business with less than 50 employees.
Our industry is fortunate to have bipartisan support for our work and a Governor that clearly recognizes the power of tourism to create jobs. Today's announcement demonstrates that we are starting to see results in a big way.
Hurray for Tourism!
Stephanie
